This conference seeks to provide a forum for exchange of ideas among scholars who are engaged in quality research in the areas of agriculture, household food security, diet diversity, reproductive, child health, and nutrition outcomes. The central theme of the conference is to understand how India can end all forms of malnutrition by the year 2030 in line with Sustainable Development Goals. The conference is being organized as part of the research initiative ‘System of Promoting Appropriate National Dynamism for Agriculture and Nutrition’ (SPANDAN) which is supported by a grant from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Description : The workshop on Economic Instruments of Water Resource Management organized by the IGIDR is an educational workshop with the goal of discussing the latest work on economic issues related water resource management. Scholars of international repute have been invited to share their knowledge on several topics related this area. Invitations were extended to interested people from academia, government, industry and NGOs so as to maximize the knowledge diffusion, reach and impact of the frontier ideas to the rest of the country, far beyond its own campus. Topics covered in the workshop include sectoral overviews such as changing priorities in Indian irrigation, Challenges of providing drinking water and disposal of waste water, issues in flood control and management. It also includes conceptual issues related water resource management such as virtual water trade, determinants to access to drinking water, economic vs human rights to water and market and non-market instruments for water governance.

Our ability to adequately capture stylized facts in financial and economic data depends crucially on the development of good models and the estimation of their parameters. Description : Research on Macroeconomics and Finance in the Indian Economy IGIDR, Mumbai, India Research on macroeconomic sand finance in India gained importance after the reforms, initiated in 1991. Changes in the monetary regime and institutions, more openness, development of debt and equity markets, initiation of the derivative market, banking sector reforms, and several other measures raised new questions and policy issues. This, together with closer linkage to international research in a more open economy has rejuvenated monetary and financial research in India. With the support of the Reserve Bank of India, IGIDR took the initiative in bringing together researchers in this area, to encourage rigorous work, made relevant by interchange with practitioners and policy-makers. Description : The conference series brings together researchers from around the world investigating the impact of corporate governance on firm performance and economic development, and the role of legal, economic and political institutions in shaping corporate governance systems in emerging markets. The conference series aims to facilitate dissemination of state of the art research on corporate governance in emerging markets with the objective of supporting policy and practice development. Description :
The objective of the one day conference organized as part of the silver jubilee year celebrations of Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR) is to have a conversation on emerging issues on urbanization in India. The distinctiveness of the workshop is the gathering of select scholars and practitioners from the fields of architecture, development, economics, education, geography, human rights and sociology. While we have a fair understanding of the macro picture on urbanization from data available as part of Census of India and surveys conducted by National Sample Survey Organisation, due to limitations of data, it has proved difficult to understand specific processes occurring in India’s cities. In light of this, the one day conference is an attempt to have a detailed and meaningful conversation on the contentious issue of land, city development plans, the perspectives emerging from field level studies and issues relating to rights based development.

Silver Jubilee Conference on Human Development

IGIDR is observing its Silver Jubilee with a variety of high profile academic events this year. The conference on Human Development will be one such event during 26-28 September 2013. Two major themes have been selected for this conference. i) Equity issues, including poverty and inequality; and ii) Sustainability of Development, to encompass the perspectives of macroeconomic, social and capabilities-based, and environmental-natural resource based sustainability. On sustainability, there would be two focus areas: a) Forests, mineral resources, and tribals as a deprived community which have large habitations in these regions and use them for their livelihoods; and b) Water as it concerns agriculture, health, nutrition/hygiene, etc., and used extensively in the development process with major footprints on equity and environment.
We hope to get researchers and practitioners from all over India and a few from abroad to share their contributions with the select gathering. We wish to extend this opportunity to about 30 ‘young scholars’ in Social Sciences (especially but not exclusively in Economics) from all over India actively involved in research and teaching who may benefit from this event. Those who have finished their Ph. D. in the last 3 years or are teaching in a UGC recognized institution for no more than 5 years may apply. As part of the event, these scholars will be expected to actively participate in the event, and may be encouraged to make short presentations of their research findings.
Those selected will be provided full boarding and accommodation in twin-sharing AC suites, and 3-tier AC travel by train and incidental expenses will be reimbursed.

Cities and Sustainability

Due to the increasing urbanization as a part of the societal transformation, Indian cities are growing into mega cities with increased economic activity and rising migrant population. Their demand for energy and resources is on rise and so is the inequity in services provision. With the climate change problem looming over and cities being the major contributors, it is important to have an integrated approach towards the sustainable pathways for city development. Such integration should focus on developing response strategies aiming at climate change control, building more resilient and ecologically sound habitats, provision of quality services that are equitable and improving the urban governance. IGIDR, in its Silver Jubilee Conference on Cities and Sustainability focuses on these key elements of urban sustainability.
