IGIDR Ph.D. students also occupy prestigious positions in the financial and corporate sector such as the Reserve Bank of India, National Stock Exchange, American Express, Citibank, ….

Vision of the Programme

The Ph.D. programme at IGIDR aims to develop researchers and policy professionals capable of addressing today’s key developmental challenges. It promotes an intellectually rigorous and interdisciplinary environment grounded in economics. Students are encouraged to tackle issues like inequality, climate change, public policy, health, energy, and global finance using strong research and quantitative methods. The programme aspires to create not just academic scholars, but also policy leaders who drive national and global change. With expert faculty, rich data resources, and strong research networks, IGIDR nurtures innovation with impact, empowering students to become agents of sustainable and inclusive development.

Structure and Duration of the programme

The minimum duration of the PhD programmes at IGIDR is of three years including two years of course work followed by thesis writing. To register to the Ph.D. degree, a student is required to (i) complete 64 credits comprising core and elective courses (ii) should have scored a minimum CGPA of 3.0 at the end of second, third and fourth semesters, and (iii) pass their proposal evaluation cum comprehensive examination. Students are required to pass the external thesis evaluation followed by viva-voce examination before conferment of Ph.D. Degree.

With dedicated faculty mentorship, vibrant peer interaction, and global exposure through conferences and research collaborations, scholars are empowered to grow and lead.
PhD students receive a monthly stipend of ₹31,000 for the first two years, increasing to ₹43,750 after registration, with part-time research or teaching assistantship from the second year; those joining after MSc or MPhil from IGIDR receive the stipend for three years.
