The Ph.D. programme at IGIDR is designed for curious, driven minds passionate about addressing real-world economic and developmental challenges.
Students build a strong foundation in economic theory while gaining interdisciplinary exposure. With close faculty mentorship, access to global research forums, and a dynamic academic ecosystem, scholars are equipped to lead impactful research.
Over a minimum of three years, candidates complete advanced coursework and develop original dissertations. Eligible M.Sc. students may transition into the Ph.D. stream.

Ph.D. Colloquium – Conversations on Research (CoRe)
CoRe is IGIDR’s annual colloquium that brings together doctoral students in Economics, Development Studies, and Energy & Environment. The event provides
a platform to present their ongoing research and gain valuable feedback
an opportunity to meet doctoral students from other parts of the countryÂ
Guidance on publishing, career development, and academic networking
Participants benefit from sessions on research challenges, publishing strategies, and post-Ph.D. career planning, along with networking opportunities across institutions.
Post-Doctoral Fellowship
Programme
IGIDR’s Post-Doctoral Fellowship Programme supports early-career researchers pursuing independent, high-quality work in Economics, Public Policy, and related areas. It offers an enriching academic environment to deepen expertise and contribute to impactful research.
Supporting scholars in high-quality, independent research in Economics and Public Policy.
Fellows receive:

- ₹70,000 monthly stipend

- On-campus accommodation (subject to availability)

- Full access to IGIDR’s academic, library, and computing facilities
This programme offers an ideal environment for post-doctoral researchers to deepen their expertise, collaborate with leading faculty, and contribute to impactful research.
Visiting Scholar Programme (VScP)
Explore Academic Research Through Hands-On Learning
IGIDR’s Visiting Students Programme is designed for students curious about academic research and eager to gain first-hand experience in a leading research environment. Mentored Research Experience:
Each selected student is paired with a faculty supervisor for the duration of the programme, working on a research project.
Final Research Report:
Students are expected to submit a report summarizing their research at the end of the programme.
Eligibility:
- 1st-year Master’s students (M.A., M.B.A., M.Com., M.Sc., M.Stat.)
- 3rd-year B.E./B.Tech. students
- 4th-year students in integrated Master’s programmes
Stipend & Support:
- Stipend of ₹9,000 for the entire duration
- Sleeper class roundtrip train fare reimbursement
- Free on-campus shared accommodation
Visiting Students Programme (VSP)​
Explore research. Experience mentorship. Expand possibilities.
The Visiting Students Programme at IGIDR is designed for students eager to explore academic research through hands-on experience. Selected students will work closely with IGIDR faculty on ongoing projects and gain early exposure to the research process.
Students currently in:
- 1st-year Master’s Programmes M.A., M.B.A., M.Com., M.Sc., M.Stat.)
- 3rd year of Engineering (B.E., B.Tech.)
- 4th year of integrated Master’s programmes
Programme Details:
Duration: June 2, 2025 – July 17, 2025 Stipend: ₹9,000 for the entire period Facilities:
- Free shared on-campus accommodation
- Sleeper class round-trip train fare
